Casual Friday

Smile its Friday, let's all get our denims on...

"The next day at work was Causal Friday, a repugnant custom that permits the men to dress like teenage boys and the girls like tramps." (from Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland)

It sounds like a great idea to many managers but casual friday really is an insult to adult workers. It somehow puts the boss in the role of a parent that specifies who can wear what and when. It highlights Monday-Thursday mandatory Non-Casual and Friday Mandatory Casual. When did employers become mothers? Can people not be trusted to dress themselves any longer?

In a world where we have enough incentive to manage ourselves and work out our own future, it is time to initiate a Dress-Yourself-Everyday work environment.

Go on, start a new trend and manage yourself...

In our company, we require a certain dress from Monday - Thursday. This is to ensure our clients percieve our company as the professionals we believe ourselves to be.

On friday, we have the option of wearing what you want but are not "required" to dress casually. In fact, if you are going to be interacting with clients in person you are still expected to dress professionally.

So for us, casual friday is not an insult to our employees, but an opportunity to relax a standard that is normally set much higher. Or as we like to call it, "laundry day".

Given the proposed philosophy of self government, what should we do with an employee that is frequently under-dressing for important client meetings? Isn't it my roll as the manager to ensure our public image remains as high quality as possible? Is our dress code not effectively a part of our overall brand?

It all seems a bit strange that we are always responding to others expectations or percieved expectations. It's okay if the company wants to dress smart as part of their branding but doesn't corporate uniform suggest corporate uniformity? I want my clients to know we are different relaxed and willing to work outside of the box. If you judge us by what we wear then their is shallowness to the whole deal. Clients want good product and quality work I would like to believe that dress code should irrelevant! It's not but how do we change it?
